Distant Echo at the John Peel World Cup
The 2012 John Peel World Cup takes place this Saturday, 19th May. The five a side tournament is in it’s third year and attracts teams from across the music industry. The event was set up in memory of the late, great DJ John Peel who inspired so many and championed music for decades before his sad and untimely death in 2004.
This year’s tournament forms part of the Liverpool Sound City festival calender and takes place in two special constructed pitches in the Liverpool ONE shopping centre, in the heart of the city. It includes teams representing bands such as our favourites The Tea Street Band along with labels such as 80s Casuals and Umbro.
We’re proud to say that Distant Echo is one of the pitch side sponsors for the event. All funds raised are going to the British Heart Foundation, a cause that we are only too happy to support.
It’s free to watch the tournament so if you’re out and about in the city be sure to pop along. It begins at noon and the final will be wrapped up by 17.00.
Northern Aficionado fanzine
Despite the economic downturn there seems to be one area that’s healthy, the fanzine world. Maybe recession that sparks creativity or perhaps it’s always been here. We’re not sure, we’ll leave that to the social commentators. But either way we’re pleased to welcome
Northern Aficionado.
The fanzine has been started by a couple of lads in Yorkshire and will now sit next to
BOSS and
Proper in our
mag section.
Northern Aficionado is available from
here for £2.
NME Cover 1990
Here’s a 1990 cover from NME that features The Farm’s Peter Hooton wearing a 35 Summers Bill Shankly t-shirt. The t-shirt has recently been reissued by 80s Casuals and when we got posted it to the site last week it flew out. We’ve now had a full restock but we’d suggest you’re quick. Two decades on the top is proving as popular on Merseyside as it was first time round.

Distant Echo Boxing Tournament Sponsorship
A boxing tournament takes place in Liverpool today to raise funds for the Hillsborough Justice Campaign (HJC) and we’re one of the main sponsors.
It’s a White Collar event and the card features many fighters who have never stepped into the ring before. Some are even taking on their mates for a very worthwhile cause.
The action kicks off this afternoon at 4pm in Liverpool city centre and is the climax to many many months hard work by Danny Withington at No Limits Gym.
The event is a sell out and over 700 people are expected to gather to watch the fighters - both reds and blues - slog it out.
The HJC is an organisation that supports the families of the 96 fans who died in the Hillsborough Disaster as well as those survivors who still suffer to this day. It’s a worthy cause that continues to highlight and fight for justice and one we are proud to support.
Iconic 35 Summers Bill Shankly T-Shirt
Despite a mid-week blip, fans of Liverpool Football Club will be still celebrating reaching the FA Cup semi final and the propsect of meeting city-rivals Everton at Wembley.
Today we’ve got more good news. Next week we’ll be getting our hands on an 80s Casuals reissue of one of the most iconic LFC t-shirts ever; the 35 Summers Bill Shankly top.
35 Summers were a band late-80s/early-90s band from Widnes that were just as famous for their t-shirt take on the former Anfield manager as they were for their music. The t-shirt was worn by lead singer of The Farm in the band’s Groovy Train video and subsequently by lads across Merseyside. 80s Casuals re-released the top to critical acclaim a few years back and we’re pleased to say they’re doing another run for us this spring.
We expect to have this great t-shirt in both classic white and marl grey by the middle of next week.

As seen in The Farm’s Groovy Train video
80s Casuals Cap

We will soon be taking delivery of the
80s Casuals Cap in time for Easter. This is the first cap from Eighties and will be available in beige and navy.
Keep an eye on our Twitter/Facebook for details of when the cap becomes available.
Casual Co Northern Music Factory restock on it’s way

We’re pleased to say we’ve got a restock on the way of one of our most consistently popular t-shirts, The Casual Connoisseur Northern Music Club.
This tee is without a doubt one of the most iconic casual culture designs ever. It features dozens of bands that have hailed from the North of England. The groups that have defined a generation from Liverpool, Manchester and beyond are set in a classic working class silhouette scene.
We will have Small though to Double XL in the navy variant of this t-shirt arriving in the next few weeks. If you’d like to reserve one get in touch!
New 80s Casuals for March

The latest arrival from our friends from 80s Casuals will be with us very soon and we thought we’d give you a little sneak peek. We’ll have three brand new designs and a restock of a current favourite. There’s a new twist on the very popular Northern Exposure t-shirt that features the back of a football lad in a CP Mille Miglia this time in a sky blue coat (top left). There’s a t-shirt in the style of iconic 80s brand Maccano (top right). There’s a reworking on an old Michael Caine t-shirt that 80s have done before (bottom left). And fianlly, as pictured on the bottom right we’ll have a full restock of the 80s Casuals For Club and Country t-shirt.
All these t-shirts have the 2012 EIGHTIES signature and new swing tags.
Incoming Casual Connoisseur

We’ll have some brand new Casual Connoisseur on the site from Monday 27th February. There’s always excitement when new CC stock arrives and this latest drop will be no different. There’s a modern-twist on the Kray brothers a nod to Russian Revolutionaries and a tribute to the Goonies movie.
All will be up on Monday. See you then…!
New 80s Casuals swing tags
The lads at 80s Casuals have kicked off 2012 with some updates on their brand. There’s now referenced to the popular short hand name
EIGHTIES (although we appreciated it’s almost as long!). We’ll have more on that this week.
This evening we thought we’d quickly introduce the new swing tickets. Attached to all 2012 garments the new tag design is hand drawn by illustrator Pete McKee.
It features seven football lads travelling in Europe in the 80s. It’s a big thumbs up from us.
